What is ArtCraft?
ArtCraft (the AI art tool and open-source Crafting Apps suite from getartcraft.com) is two things under one name: a controllable AI generator for visual work, and a family of seven free, open-source applications written in Rust. The official positioning is "Controllable AI for Artists", and the official site's promise is "No subscription required". The suite is listed for macOS, Windows and Web.
The best-known member of the family is PhotoCraft (the open-source Photoshop alternative by the ArtCraft team), the image editor this site is built around. The other six apps cover vector illustration, video editing, photo libraries and RAW development, PDF tools, motion graphics, and typography and publishing.
Not to be confused with the ArtCraft typeface or other unrelated products that share the name. This page is about the creative software, not a font or a theater company.
If PhotoCraft is what you came for, the PhotoCraft Hub home page is the fastest way in.
The AI side: controllable generation
ArtCraft AI is built around directing a result instead of accepting whatever a prompt hands back. The official list names seven capabilities; six of them are below.
Image to Location
Place a subject into a location taken from a reference image, so you choose where the shot happens instead of describing it in a prompt.
3D Compositing
Work generated elements into a 3D scene, where the point is holding depth and scale together rather than pasting flat layers.
2D Compositing
Combine generated output with flat artwork on one canvas, using the layer stacking most artists already work with.
Image to 3D Mesh
Turn an image into a 3D mesh asset you can reuse in a scene, bridging still pictures and objects you can move around.
Character Posing
Treat a character's pose as a control you set, rather than as text you have to guess at.
Background Removal
Cut a subject away from its background so it can be placed onto a new one.
Mixed Assets is the seventh feature on the official list, and it is the one about combining several kinds of asset inside a single project. The officially shown model support includes Seedance 2.5 and Nano Banana 2. The pitch stays the same throughout: controllability for artists, not one-click novelty.
The 7 Crafting Apps explained
The Crafting Apps are the open-source half of ArtCraft: seven Rust applications, each aimed at one part of a creative workflow. Two are early alpha and five are still in development, which is the honest state of the suite today.
| App | What it does | Status | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| PhotoCraft | Image editing | Early alpha | macOS, Windows, Web |
| VectorCraft | Vector illustration | In development | macOS, Windows, Web |
| FilmCraft | Video editing | In development | macOS, Windows, Web |
| LightCraft | Photo library & RAW development | In development | macOS, Windows, Web |
| PdfCraft | PDF tools | Early alpha | macOS, Windows, Web |
| EffectCraft | Motion graphics & VFX | In development | macOS, Windows, Web |
| DesignCraft | Typography & publishing | In development | macOS, Windows, Web |
PhotoCraft is the app most people arrive for, and the one furthest along. The official description calls it an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop in pure Rust, with layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors, brushes and real PSD file read and write.
The rest cover the same ground for other formats: vectors, video, RAW photo libraries, PDFs, motion graphics, and print-ready type and layout. None of them is finished, so read the table as a roadmap as much as a feature list. Our PhotoCraft vs Photoshop comparison picks up where that description leaves off.
How to download ArtCraft
The recommended way to install ArtCraft is the ArtCraft Launcher, which installs the whole suite and keeps every app updated. The ArtCraft download page lists every option. Each application also has a standalone installer if you only want one of them.
- 1
Open the official download page
Start at getartcraft.com/download and pick your platform: macOS, Windows or the web version.
- 2
Choose the Launcher or a single app
The Launcher installs the suite and handles the updates. Standalone installers are there for anyone who wants one app only.
- 3
Install and open the app
Run the installer, then launch the app. Expect missing pieces in alpha and in-development builds.
Download ArtCraft only from the official links on getartcraft.com. This site does not host, mirror or repackage any installer, and unofficial copies of alpha software are not worth the risk.
Launcher or standalone?
The Launcher keeps every Crafting App on one update path. Take a standalone installer when you only want a single app.
PhotoCraft has its own detailed install walkthrough at our PhotoCraft download guide, which covers that app on its own rather than the whole suite.
Is ArtCraft free?
Yes. The official site's answer is "No subscription required", and the seven Crafting Apps are open source and written in Rust, so there is no license fee to run them. The official site also publishes a pricing page if you want the vendor's own wording.
What free does not mean is finished. Several apps are early alpha or in development, so features are still arriving and rough edges are normal. PhotoCraft is the clearest example: PhotoCraft is in early alpha (as of October 2026) — features are evolving fast.
The trade is straightforward: open source and no subscription on one side, unfinished features and change on the other.
ArtCraft vs PhotoCraft: what is the difference?
ArtCraft is the umbrella brand and the AI tool; PhotoCraft is the image editor inside the Crafting Apps suite. ArtCraft is therefore the bigger name: it covers controllable AI generation and all seven applications, while PhotoCraft is one of those seven, focused on layered image editing.
If layered editing and PSD files are what you need, start with PhotoCraft. Our PhotoCraft tutorial covers the basics, the PhotoCraft and Photoshop head-to-head puts it next to the incumbent, and the PhotoCraft download page gets you installed.
